Dermatologists diagnose
and treat all aspects of healthy and diseased skin in adults and children including conditions such as skin cancer, melanomas, moles, dermatitis, acne, hair loss, scars, sexually transmitted diseases, and the skin changes associated with aging.
Specialty training required prior to Board Certification: Four years
Subspecialties:
To become certified in a particular subspecialty, a physician must be Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology and complete additional training as specified by the Member Board.
Dermatopathology
A Dermatopathologist is expert in diagnosing and monitoring diseases of the skin, including infectious, immunologic, degenerative and neoplastic diseases. This entails the examination and interpretation of specially prepared tissue sections, cellular scrapings and smears of skin lesions by means of light microscopy, electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy.
Pediatric Dermatology
A Pediatric Dermatologist treats specific skin disease categories with emphasis on those diseases which predominate in infants, children and adolescents.
